UNITEN RESEARCH PARTICIPATION AT INPEX 2007, PITTSBURGH, USA

Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) was awarded the highly coveted Silver Medal at THE INVENTIONS & NEW PRODUCTS EXPOSITION (INPEX) 2007 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA on 6 9 June 2007.

UNITENs research project team, headed by Ir. Marlinda Bt. Abdul Malek, a principal lecturer in Civil Engineering Department, College of Engineering (COE) showcased its prototype product called Rainfall Missing Data Imputator (codenamed RaMeDy version 1), a prototype method of imputating missing rainfall data which has vast potential to be applied in many other areas beyond hydrology, dealing with incomplete and missing data. Despite being UNITENs maiden entry in international competition, RaMeDy, due to its sheer technical and commercial potential, had successfully gained the accolade by the international community.

A total of approximately 624 participants from private companies and various institutes of higher learning worldwide took part in this exposition. The Malaysian contingent comprised of Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Universiti Malaysia Perlis, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Islam Antarabangsa, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Universiti Teknologi Petronas and MARDI. Other international delegations are Australia, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Netherlands, Russia, Moldova, Spain, England, USA, Korea and Taiwn.

UNITEN hopes that this recognition will encourage other academicians to strive for the best in their research works and be at par, if not better than, other international research institutions locally and internationally. Not only the awareness of quality research works that UNITEN is capable of producing would increase, it also elevates UNITEN itself to a level to be reckoned and position UNITEN clearly on the map of todays globalised world.

UNITEN, the highest grant recipient among private universities for EScience Fund from MOSTI.

A ceremony was held by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) MOSTI in Universiti Putra Malaysia on the 17 September 2007 to officially handover MOSTI grants. The ceremony, Majlis Penyampaian Geran Penyelidikan 2007 was attended by both Dato Sri Dr. Jamaluddin Jarjis, the Minister of MOSTI and Dato Mustapa Mohamed, The Higher Education Minister.  In the ceremony, UNITEN received 31 research grants under EScience, with the value estimated at RM5.2 million. This placed UNITEN 7th in rank, among the recipient institutions which includes public and private universities and research institutions in the year 2007. It is also the highest among private institutions (refer to the table below).

This achievement proves that UNITEN is committed to research excellence and promotes research and development activities, in tandem with its excellence in tertiary education. It also proves that being a private entity does not hinder UNITEN's efforts to actively participate in research and development activities, at par with the public universities.

Congratulations!
