Report on UNITEN Participation in PECIPTA 2009
8 -10 October 2009 Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre Malaysia
The Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) in its efforts to encourage research and development in Science and Technology has taken the initiative to sponsor and organise PECIPTA (Persidangan dan Ekspo Ciptaan Institusi Pengajian Tinggi Antarabangsa). This exposition aims to display products, inventions and innovations produced by research from Higher Learning Institutions. PECIPTA was held for the first time in 2001, with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) as the event host. Subsequently, IPTAs appointed as hosts for this biannual event were Universiti Putra Malaysia (2003), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (2005) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (2007). In 2009, University of Malaya has been given the honour to collaborate with MoHE in organising this exposition.
PECIPTA 2009 aims to exhibit products, inventions and innovations from Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) in Malaysia and overseas, thus providing an opportunity for participants to establish networks and collaborations towards the commercialisation of developed prototypes.
The main objectives of PECIPTA 2009:

- to support the aspirations of the government for the growth of the country by emphasizing research and development;
- to exhibit products, inventions and innovation from the research and development programmes of IHL;
- to exhibit products and inventions produced by IHL which have been commercialised, as well as to market the research expertise and competency locally and internationally;
- to increase the confidence levels of the industrial sector and other agencies in local research expertise in order to enhance and facilitate collaborative opportunities for both parties (business matching);
- to create networking and strategic collaborations between IHL and other agencies including entrepreneurs, companies and individuals; and
- to create an opportunity for local IHL to strengthen collaborative efforts with international institutions in research and development as well as in academia.
This year PECIPTA was officiated by the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tan Sri Dato Haji Muhyiddin bin Mohd. Yassin. There were about 465 inventions from 22 IHL participated in this year PECITPA.
UNITEN participated in PECIPTA 2009 by sending in fourteen inventions; 9 from COE, 2 from COIT, 2 from COBA and 1 from IKAL. In this year competition, UNITEN won 3 Gold, 1 Silver and 4 Bronze. The detail of the winning projects and team members are as given in Table 1. The statistics of awards given out at PECIPTA, ranked according to number of gold medal won, is given in Table 2. It is worth mentioning that PECIPTA has always been the benchmark of Invention & Innovation competition in the country.
